Where It All Started

We don't really remember why we decided to go to New York City on New Years Eve in 2015, but for whatever reason, we did. It was a really cool experience, and we definitely made a few memories we'll never forget.

We didn't have time to do everything we wanted to, and we know the places we don't want to go back to, so New York is definitely a place we want to visit again!

We started out the trip leaving from DFW on a super early morning flight. By the time we landed at JFK, and took the hour and a half taxi ride to our Midtown hotel, the day felt over. But, we didn't have any time to waste!

Everybody loves a 5:00 am flight!
The next few days flew by, and were packed with LOTS of activities. We did a lot of the normal "tourist attraction" stuff, like the Hop On-Hop Off Sightseeing Bus, eating in Little Italy, and using the tickets from our CityPASSes.

It was cold on top of that bus
Then, New Year's Eve rolled around.

We went to Chevy's, the restaurant we had tickets to *near* Times Square, around 6:00pm. From then on, it was just a waiting game. We waited outside, until we were able to go in. We waited inside until the buffet was ready. Then, we waited a looooong time until it was midnight.

Around 11:00, we decided we didn't just want to stay in the restaurant and watch the ball drop on TV. We wanted to go outside and see it for ourselves. Well, everyone else also thought this. The massive crowd of people outside at this point was insane. We finally found a little street corner where, if you turned your head just right, you could get a glimpse of the ball through the buildings. So we waited there, with a million of our closest friends, and "rung in the new year" from afar. When the street lights hit just right, you could see the confetti falling in the distance!

About 3 seconds after the clock struck midnight, madness ensued. The whole area around Times Square is so blocked offed and secured during all of this, there are only so many places you can go. We, and everyone around, could only walk one way: away from "the ball". So, we took off that way and we only got a few blocks before we realized how powerful this group of people we were surrounded by was. We, being Katy, Mother, and I, were in a single file line, holding onto the back of each others jackets. We started to get separated a little bit, and soon after that realized we were no longer touching the ground. There were so many people around us, the lucky ones stuck in the middle just got lifted up by all the other people moving. Very quickly after this started happening, we decided it was going to take way too long to move in the mosh pit all the way back to our hotel.

You know those bikes with little carts behind them, that pick people up, and pedal them to their destination at crowded events? Well, that looked like a pretty good idea in the mess we were in. We flagged down this guy and piled into his little bike cart. I don't think it should have fit three people, but it definitely didn't fit us comfortably. On the plus side, it was partially closed in by a tent type material, so we at least felt like it was a little bit stable.

"Inside" our bike cart. Katy looks terrified.
After settling into our cart, our pedaller took off. There was, of course, a lot of traffic, foot and cars. And cops. Cops EVERYWHERE. Our biker-guy was just weaving through the traffic and zooming through Times Square. At one point, we were going down the middle of the lanes on Fifth Avenue. After one particularly risky turn, we had a NYPD cop grab the side of our cart, and yell at our biker-guy that if he didn't start being more careful, he was going to "kill these people". Yikes.

We did, eventually, make it back safely to our hotel. After going up to the room and recounting what had just happened, we decided it was too funny not to share and that we didn't want to forget about that happening. So, we posted it on Facebook.

After that night, we liked how it seemed like a good place to keep up with what we did each day, pictures we took, and off the wall things that happened.

Since then, every trip we've gone on has been pretty thoroughly documented on Facebook, and it is so cool to look back at those memories now.

From now on, though, we hope that this is our space to share pictures, crazy stories, and things we never wanna forget.
